Deceived by the Gargoyles was amazing, fantastic, out-of-this-world! It's every single synonym you can think of for amazing! I absolutely love mates/fated mate tropes. I ate that up when I was thirteen, reading the corniest stories on Wattpad at 2 in the morning, okay? And that has just stuck with me throughout the years. I love fated mates/mates when it comes to fanfiction (Dramione anyone) and romance/fantasy fiction. That's the hopeless romantic introvert in me. I want a "soul mate" that will love and deal with my crazy and still love me when I go through difficulties in life and stick with me. That's just what I want. So when I see fated mates and mate tropes in books or media, I literally will devour it like its pie, okay? And Deceived by the Gargoyles delivered that and more!
Grace Starling is a witchy librarian looking for a man, not just any man, mind you—a man who will love her and give her what she desires most: a family.
Elliot Bramblewick is a schemer, a master planner, who first notices something is missing in his and mates' lives.
A clan in need of something, a woman in need of a family and love that is healthy, giving, and stable, is what sets up our story.
This story, from the very first page, had me strapped in and ready for the ride of emotions. It glued me to my kindle, and I allowed myself to be wrapped up in Grace's, Elliott's, Broderick's, and Alasdair's tale of romance and acceptance. I had to force myself to stop and go to sleep, eat, and attend my lessons. Though I was slightly distracted throughout the entire time. All I kept thinking was "I can't wait to be done and read.". That's all I wanted; to sit and read this group's love story, to cry and root for them.
I don't think I've felt like this in a bit; completely obsessed with a book alone. Recently the only books I've been so obsessed with and invested in are the Ice Planet Barbarians series!
There's just something about Lillian Lark's writing style that just transported me into another world. A world where gargoyles and orcs live, with witches and humans, in a world where soulmates are real and possible. I am in now need and search of a gargoyle prince to sweep me off my feet and take me flying in the night sky as they whisper promises of our lives together.
The spice was absolutely FANTASTIC! Hot, sensual, and was actually really freaking good. No annoying usage of words (although some disagree and say "seed" is annoying or un-sexy, though I disagree with that sentiment), consent and romantic scenes, lovely non-human anatomy, and overall steamy.
There are some M/M scenes and M/M/F, and before diving into this book, I would check out the content warnings here on the author's website.
I am now looking to purchase the physical copy of this book along with Lark's other works, because I loved her writing! The style of it was easy to get lost in and be able to fully visualize what was happening without going too in-depth or way too vague. Plus, I personally love short chapters more. It makes me feel like I'm getting more reading done than long chapters, and man on man, Lark was superb with the short chapters!
I highly recommend this if you're looking for some plus-size paranormal/monster romance, are into reverse harems or are looking into the trope, or are just wanting to kick up the heat of your reading taste and start getting some slightly weird and questionable book recommendations from Goodreads.
